Running 101 - How to Get Started

Starting to Run

An Introduction to Running

We are built to run. This is a simple fact and something that I didn't believe for the first 40 years of my life. I played some sports in school, was physically active when I was younger and did some serious bike riding for a few years but I just didn't think running was for me and I didn't think I'd ever be able to run more than a mile. With my short legs and long torso I just didn't have the right build to run. The truth is I was wrong, I can run and so can you.

Running is one of the best ways to get in shape and, with a little dedication, is really something anyone can do1. I've gotten more out of training and running both physically and mentally than any other activity I've ever done in my life. The rewards of running are huge and the effects of routine physical activity on the brain are amazing (for more info on this read the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J Ratey, MD - the first chapter is 24 pages long and is all I needed to read to become convinced). I've been running for over 2 years now, with 3 half-marathons (13.1 miles), a 10 miler, and a number of 5k's under my belt I'm now training for a full marathon (26.2 miles). I'm not the fastest runner out there but I'm doing it, my resting heart rate has dropped from 80 to around 45 beats per minute, I routinely run 7 miles and my long Saturday morning runs are over now over 15 miles.
